Purpose, Goals, Ready, Set, Go
One of the most important things you can do as a man is to define your purpose, set your goals and work on them. What do you want from life? What will make you feel fulfilled?
You need to have a long term goal that you can work towards and break it down into monthly and daily goals.
Everyday, work towards that goal.
Consistency and Persistence is key.
Believe us, there is no better feeling in the world than setting a goal, facing the challenges and overcoming them to be successful.
Practical tip: Get a piece of paper and start writing down what you want from life. It doesn’t matter if it is a small goal or a big goal. You may want a new car or you may want to start a charitable foundation. Write it all down. Stick this paper somewhere next to your bed so that the first thing you see when you wake up are your goals. They will get you charged up for the big day ahead.
Your goals may be affected in adversity such as during the pandemic. Understand that not everything is in our control. The best you can do is put in the work and if despite all your efforts, you are unable to succeed, realise that you never fail, you only learn. Pick yourself up and move on to the next goal.
Get your finances in order
If your finances are in order, you’ll feel better, you’ll be happier.
Never let yourself get to a stage where you can’t pay your bills. Not only is it physically detrimental, it is also mentally damaging. You’ll spiral downwards into a negative state of mind and find it very difficult to pull yourself out of this state.
Practical tip: Work out how much you would like to be earning on a yearly basis. Jot down all the ways in which you could make money, a job, trading stocks, investing? Write down an actual number that you expect to be making on a yearly basis from these methods. You need to be very specific rather than jotting down ideas in a vague manner. Sum it all up and check if you can cover your expenses and save as well. Keep checking on this regularly and keep working on how you could earn even more.
No wealth without health
Your health comes first. If you are not in good health, you can not be fully productive.
Virgin Group’s founder, Richard Branson, was asked his secret to success. He said “work out”.
Get that exercise into your daily routine. Go to the gym, go for a run, take up boxing classes or yoga. Do whatever takes your fancy but get that movement into your life.
Not only will your body be fit, your mind will also work better. You’ll look good and definitely attract the ladies too.
Practical tip: Allocate a time for exercise whether it is in the early morning or in the evening. No matter what, stick to it. Do not get lazy. Set an alarm if you need to. Once you get into the grind of things, you’ll actually enjoy going to work out.
Eat right, cut out sugar and alcoholic beverages
Eating right takes discipline. But if you genuinely care about looking and feeling better, you need to cut out the junk food and load up on fresh fruits and vegetables.
Cut out sugar as much as possible. Sugar has a way of spiking your energy levels and suddenly making you feel tired too. It can increase your risk of diabetes as well as make you older faster.
Yes, cut out alcohol as much as you can. You can always have a drink now and then with your friends but cutting out the beer will help you reduce that belly fat, help you sleep better, be in a better mood and save you money too!
Practical tip: Learn to cook with fresh vegetables, there are loads of recipes online that you can use e.g from BBC Goodfood. Stock up on healthier alternatives such as fruits, nuts, seeds rather than sugary treats. Plan more active stuff such as cycling, hiking with your friends rather than hanging out at the bar, this will ensure you drink less and get your exercise too!
Want to look and feel better? You need to dress right.
Dressing right can make you look like a completely different man.
You can dress for the occasion e.g suits at work, business casual at after-work drinks and even street style when hanging out with your friends. The key is to dress well with something that fits. Ditch those baggy trousers, dirty trainers and tacky old hoodies.
Adopt a positive mindset
Being positive will take you one step closer to being a better man.
Learn to say yes to opportunities, events, ideas, people and watch how your life changes.
You’ll feel happier, life will work out better and who knows, it may take you one step closer to your goals.
It’s not just about what you say but also how you think. Adopt a positive mindset, letting go of negative thoughts.
We are naturally compelled to say no to most situations because of our “chimp” brain that’s always looking to survive and is wary of anything that may seem like an attack, even if it is just feeling nervous when talking to a girl you like. Your “chimp” brain will compel you to pass up that opportunity, however, if you are positive and think, “what’s the worst that will happen”, you might actually find yourself going on a date with that cute girl.
Practical tip: Be aware of your thoughts, actions and words. Everytime you sense a negative thought, let it pass. Meditate to clear your head. Go out for a walk in the woods and let those thoughts pass. Try to be positive for a day or try to be more positive than yesterday. Take it at your own pace.
Be respectful and responsible
It is easy to be disrespectful and irresponsible. Anyone can do that. But it takes a man to be respectful of others needs and own up to his responsibilities.
Be a better man by treating those around you right. So what if they are inferior to you in terms of wealth or your profession? So what if they look rough? Is she a woman? All the more reason to respect her. Treat them right and you’ll be a better man for it.
Learn to take on responsibility.
Be responsible at work. Be responsible at home. Be responsible around your friends. Be a man of your word and follow through.
You’ll receive respect from those around you too and feel more confident in return.
One of the best ways to be a better man is to help others.
Contribute to charity. Help those who can’t help themselves.
Don’t have any spare cash? No worries, you can volunteer your time and help out. The time you spend with those less fortunate will be much appreciated.
You can also carry out small acts of kindness on a day to day basis. Help an older person cross the road. Buy a coffee for a homeless person.
Every small action helps and it will make you feel like a better man.
