Today we would like to talk about how to be the best dressed man in the room. Dressing well is very important, not just to stand out from the crowd during those social events, but also because it could take you a long way towards achieving success and gaining the trust, respect and confidence you desire.
During the 1800’s – 1970’s, men used to dress impeccably in a suit, well-polished shoes and all the appropriate accessories. They knew that it was imperative to dress well for success. A man’s image was reflected first by the clothes he wore and then by the gent that he was. The way you dress can go a long way to say who you are as a person. For example, if you always dress shabbily, it could reflect laziness. However, if you always make an effort to look smart, it could reflect a sense of responsibility. Like it or not, people do judge you based on your appearances, hence, making an effort to dress well will create a good social image for you.
If you are reading this, you probably already know that. 🙂 You are here to find out more about what you could do to be the best dressed man in the room, so let’s jump right into it.
1) Discover your personal style and make it work for you
One of the most important things you could do is to figure out what your personal style is. What reflects you as a person?
- If you a professional person, perhaps you like wearing suits?
- If you are an entrepreneur, perhaps you like wearing smart casual i.e jeans and a blazer?
- If you are a sportsperson, perhaps you feel more comfortable in sports casuals?
- If you are a student, perhaps you feel more comfortable wearing street style casual?
The points we have outlined above are a generalisation of the type of clothing you might wear if you are in any of those professions/roles. Ofcourse, it is up to you to decide what you feel comfortable in, for example, you could be an entrepreneur who always feels comfortable wearing suits. You could be a student who loves wearing blazers and jeans/chinos.
Our point is figure out what style you like. Then practise, practise, practise. Practice makes perfect. As you start building on your own individual style that reflects your personality, you’ll get better and more confident over time.

Our favourite men’s fashion group is RealMenRealStyle. In this group, you can post your personal picture with your style and get advice from other real men. You will not be judged.
One of the popular men’s fashion pages that we follow is Men’s Fashion Magazine. This also doubles up as a fashion blog so you can get educated on style and grooming as you go along.
Men’s fashion blogs
Men’s fashion blogs are becoming less popular now with the rise of social media channels. However, you could still get some additional information on things such as how to wear a pocket square or how to compliment your suit with the perfect tie. On social media posts, you can only get a visual idea of how to style your outfit, however, for more technical information on how to wear products, men’s fashion blogs have a wealth of information.
Once you have chosen your personal style and have perfected it, we don’t see why you wouldn’t be the best dressed man in the room. You may even learn new ways to style certain accessories once you have become an expert at your specific style and add your own individualism to it. It’s all about liking what you wear and feeling confident in it.
2) Make sure your clothes fit right
We cannot emphasize this enough. You may find the style that’s perfect for you, you may practise the life out of it, but if your clothes do not fit right, you’ll look silly no matter what.
If you live in a Western country, it is usually easier to buy clothing in shops or online which means that it may or may not fit you right. Buying a t-shirt whose shoulder line is just a little bit below your shoulder may not look too bad, but buying a blazer whose shoulder line does not sit right on your shoulder will be a big mistake.
If you want to dress smart and look good, you’ll want to buy a suit/blazer. These are usually expensive but the best advice we can give is save a bit more and go that extra mile to ensure that either you can get your suit/blazer tailored or buy a suit that can be altered. You are going to spend a lump sum on a suit so it would be better to spend a bit more and have it fit right, than to spend a lot and look out of place because it is too big/small for you.
If you are wearing a pair of jeans/chinos or trousers, make sure that they are not too long/short for you unless that is the trending style. Always make sure to get these altered to sit just right.
3) Accessorise appropriately
The small details matter. One of the best ways to be the best dressed man in the room is to pick out the best accessories that go with your wardrobe.
If you are into men’s fashion, then you most probably love your shoes. No matter what your personal style, from smart loafers to smart boots to street style yeezys, there are a multitude of shoes that can really accentuate your wardrobe. No outfit is complete without a good pair of shoes, so if there’s only one thing that you can accessorise your outfit with, let it be your shoes.
We cannot count the occasions when we have come across a man who looks smart but the one thing that we focused on were his shoes. This is going to sound very abstract but these days with phones, most people usually look down. You never know, the first thing they might actually catch a glimpse of might be your shoes! 😉 Make it count.
Watches were an invention created by man to tell the time. A purely functional accessory. However, that is no longer the case. There is an entire sub-section of the population that collects watches and focuses on every single detail of every watch ever created. If you are wearing a stand-out watch, that may be the only thing that a person notices and might even be a real conversation starter.
A nice watch on your wrist will definitely stand out. Take our word for it. You could go for a clean and minimal watch or you could go for a bulkier more vintage style. It’s all down to your personal preference. Regardless, you may be considered the best dressed man in the room purely because of the watch that adorns your wrist.
Another new accessory that has recently entered the men’s world of fashion are men’s bracelets. If styled right, your beaded bracelets or leather bracelets will definitely stand out and impress those around you.
These days, most men who are on the fashion forefront tend to wear a bracelet or two next to their wrist watch. If you decide to style your watch with a beaded bracelet too, then you’ll be considered to be at the top of your game. This takes a bit of practice but if done right, it will really make you stand out from the crowd.
Pocket square and ties
If you are wearing a suit or blazer, you may want to consider wearing a tie but you should definitely wear a pocket square. These accessories will really accentuate your smart style. Make sure you choose a pocket square and tie to complement your wardrobe.
We have put together a two part series on how to wear pocket squares and how to style them with your wardrobe:
If you are wearing a suit, then you might want to consider adding cufflinks to your shirt. There are several styles of cufflinks and various cufflinks with different types of cufflink backs.
Depending on the occasion, you could wear heavier/bigger or smaller cufflinks.
Depending on the look you are going for, a scarf can add a nice detail to your wardrobe. If you going for a street style, a snood could give you that fashion edge.
If you are wearing an evening suit, you could go for a velvet scarf to give you that extra bit of class and elegance.
What you wear will go a long way in making you look good but your own personal grooming and hygiene needs to be in sync with this.
In order to be the best dressed man in the room, you should ensure that your hair is well cut and styled, your beard is trimmed and well groomed. Cleanliness and personal hygiene goes without saying. Make sure your nails are trimmed. Use a deodorant or perfume/fragrance to add that extra bit of sophistication.
As you may be aware, a person will judge you based on their senses. What they see, what they feel, what they smell will all come together in creating an image of how well dressed they think you are. So if you can play on all their senses correctly, you’ll be able to create an image of being the best dressed man in the room.
Make sure your grooming is on point!
As mentioned above, a person will judge you based on what they see, how they feel and what they smell. It’s all about their senses. You can alter a person’s image of you simply by making them feel positive and respectful towards you.
If you are beaming with confidence, standing tall, talking straight and looking them in the eye, that will all reinforce your image. Imagine wearing a suit and beaming with confidence. You’ll be labelled a well dressed man simply because of the way you made the other person feel. However, if you are well dressed but lacking confidence, when they first see you, they may be impressed but once they start talking to you, the image you initially created may melt away.
Confidence comes by practice, feeling comfortable in what you are wearing, constantly learning and achieving and feeling good. Check out our blog post on 10 ways to develop a personality that commands power and respect which will directly help you to build up your confidence.
